In these times of financial hardship and yadda yadda yadda, people like me must find ways to achieve our goals in house-literally. Without the needed moola to record vocals at a fancy schmancy studio I decided to build my own little vocal sweat box. It's actually very convenient seeing as I don't have to book studio time or pay anybody when I feel the need to caterwaul my hopes and dreams into the one's and zero's. With the help from my buddies Sam (the man with the plan and a company Home Depot card) and BBQ Chuck, I set off to construct this "little" vocal booth which now takes up 1/4th of my room. Here's some of the flix.

Behold. A few photos from the Cancer Magazine Art/Music Fest. Jan. 29th 2010. I will be adding more as I get them. Sadly however, Alley Kat Jazz Lounge (location of the event) fell victim to Rialto's chronic illness that seems to cripple any attempts at bettering the city by means of art/culture/fun/anything really worthwhile and for the most part positive or potentially damaging to the old stalwarts and proponents of mediocrity and stagnation. Seems they may be out of commission for a few months due to alleged violations. Seems there were too many people rudely overlooking neighboring pub "O'leary's" which led to overwhelming embarrassment. Poor guys. Early into one of the busiest nights Alley Kat has ever had, local law enforcers of doom (aka Rialto P.D.) along with the fire marshal proceeded to spread a sickening haze throughout the establishment causing patrons to gaze dubiously, hide their weed and/or simply and disappointingly leave. The overall claim was that Alley Kat simply had too many people there. Now I for one have been frequenting the vast watering holes peppering the Inland Empire for the better part of a decade. Ooh, some of these places are really classy. Bro's and their veritable ho's, along with wannabe's of all sorts of various flavors, flock to cultural epicenters such as the "Yardhouse" in cakey-faced droves nightly. These innovative, intellectual havens flourish mainly because of their ability to never ever EVER become crowded. You never have to spend 20 minutes trying to procure a Bud Light. EVER! Anyhoo, Alley Kat needs to learn a lesson. Lesson being: that shit just don't fly in Rialto. Though it was pretty easy to move around, dance and be merry in there as well as reasonably easy to get a drink, city enforcers decided they needed to crack down before things got out of hand. But what do we do with all these extra people? Well they can easily mosey on down to "O'Leary's Pub" owned by Rialto councilman and champion community builder Ed Scott. Thanks Ed. Where would downtown Rialto be without you. You are the shining light of a rather dismal, businessless downtown area and with that pesky Alley Kat finally neutered, you can continue to run a fine establishment that harbors staunch old vatos and rednecks while the youth in the community continue to turn to gangs and drugs and violence and teen pregnancy and theft and lack of motivation and hopelessnes and... (J.D. hold your head up)

Building a vocal booth 101: If you are unable to do this at your house, use all necessary methods of charm to convince a friend to build it at his. Example: Translu drummer Ryan Marks just so happened to have a small add-on room extending from his garage that he used to practice in. Over the last few years it has been somewhat neglected so why not put some good use to it right? Since Translu is working on releasing an EP soon, having a local, free-of-charge vocal recording facility is a benefit and necessity. Ryan agrees so last night Sam and I began the insulation process by encasing whole room with used carpet padding. Cheap and easy is the key here. Soon we'll be swapping out Ryan's hollow door with something solid to further entrap our melodious vocal exploits. Following that we plan to gut the adjacent closet, add a sound proof window and add a workspace area in said closet. Here are some photos of the one and only drunken craftsmen in our first stages of Ryan's drum room/waste of space to vocal booth extravaganza transformation.

Very very interesting night last night. Hip Kitty in Claremont. My brothers the "Golden Boys Quartet." Sean P. Bella Rouge. Sister Rogers. Of course I was there to see Golden Boys and Sean (I wasn't aware of the other bands that were playing) but I ended up running into a lot of people I haven't seen in awhile. Music was amazing. Little biased towards Golden Boys since they're my brothers but nonetheless everyone was great. Had a string of insightful conversations with the father of two of the Golden's (my surrogate father as well). He spoke passionately about allowing creative forces to BE and flow through us. About aiming high and spreading the love of your creative and positive impulses to all. He spoke of himself as "the spoon" that exist to stir the pot of the various creative entities he has been blessed to know. I get excited whenever I notice someone noticing what I'm noticing. Things are changing and the collective awareness of the undefinable changes are unifying. I personally don't wish to contrive a change. Just want to BE in it. As a catalyst. A midwife.

Let me start this off by letting you know that Trader Joe's has $2.99 six packs. They may not be your favorite brand of piss water but seriously; $3 six packs are amazing. Anyhoo, golf kicks ass. Actually riding around in carts in lush green grass drinking beer kicks ass. Kevin from Golden Boys works at the Rancho Verde Golf Course in Rialto and was kind enough to let his degenerate friends put his job on the line for a couple of hours of golf hooliganism. About a month ago, my good friend Steven Higgins and I decided it would be a stupendous (no one uses the word stupendous anymore) idea to drink a 30 year old bottle of Courvoisier as Steven asked me insightful and provocative questions.
